WonderWorx announces an innovative line of playground equipment bringing musical exploration and exuberant visual art to the playground. These inventive works of art are designed to encourage experimentation and cooperation as children generate music from their own movement and interactive play.
The WonderChime Seesaw is the first work to be realized. Inspired by the honored instrument of aboriginal peoples, it has been reinterpreted as a colorful kinetic sculpture. Crafted of bright, powdercoated steel and a clear polycarbonate tube, the sound mechanism is balanced on a fulcrum and holds an artful arrangement of chimes and colored superballs so that the see saw action of the two players initiates the sounds and rhythmic display.
A swing set modeled on the actions of a pipe organ is the second piece in the series. As a child pumps or is pushed on the swing, the pendulum action creates the air flow for the pipe organ mechanism built into the top of the structure. The participant has the opportunity to modulate the sounds by playing the flute-like holes on the hand holds. The swing, available in single and double sets, is itself a whimsical sculptural structure crafted with precision.
Children will be engaged and delighted, and adults will not be able to resist participation. All the equipment is built to ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) standards, and will accommodate adult weight.
More pieces are in development, including a cooperative marimba executed by the full body movements of multiple players and the Flextone, a percussive chair for small child and adult.
The artistic, patented concept was brought to realization by design entrepreneur Robert Tobias and is owned by WonderWorx, a Colorado limited liability company. Raredon Resources produced the initial prototypes. Together they created a radical departure in playground equipment which will turn the kinetic energy of children into music and bring an exciting, aesthetic dimension into the playground or backyard.
